Programme overview

Summary

The PhD in Sciences and Technologies for Electronic and Telecommunications engineering (STIET) of UniGe, is promoted by the Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering and Naval Architecture Department (DITEN) in agreement with the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT).
It is coordinated by Prof. Mario Marchese and divided into three curricula:
  • Electromagnetism, Electronics, Telecommunications
  • Interactive Cognitive Environments
  • Computational vision, recognition and machine learning (developed entirely at IIT)

STIET has very precise didactic and scientific rules (reported on the Dedicated website) which are transmitted to the students at the beginning of the PhD programme and are mandatory to be admitted to the next year and, at the end of the PhD, to the final exam. The PhD student is assigned with one or more tutors, first responsible for the student's learning and scientific activity. At least one of the tutors must be a university professor or a member of the Teaching Board.
STIET Teaching Board involves carefully selected international experts.

Learning objectives

The primary objective of the STIET PhD programme is to train scientists able to promote and carry out highly qualified research activities in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), highlighting, in particular, the sectors of Electronics, Telecommunications, Electromagnetism and Computer Science. The activities developed aim to include future researchers both in the productive system and in academic structures, as well as in research institutions at national and international level. Each doctoral student, at the end of the course, must have acquired skills in the development of research and a good level of autonomy, must have developed original ideas and shown capacity of interaction.
To this end important objectives are the:
  • number and quality of scientific publications
  • involvement in research projects
  • participation in international conferences
  • achievement of scientific-technical prizes and awards

Career perspectives

Two years after the acquisition of the qualification (cycle 30) 16.67% of the Research Doctors in STIET have a research role at UniGe, the same percentage has a role in Italian Research Bodies, while 25% works in foreign universities. 25% work in Italian industries and 8.33% work in Industries abroad. 8.33% work in private training bodies. In short, two years after the acquisition of the title, 33.33% of Research Doctors carry out activities within Companies while 58.33% within Italian or foreign universities or research centres.
Three years after the acquisition of the qualification (cycle 29): 54.55% of Research Doctors carry out activities within companies while 45.45% in Universities or Research Centres, in Italy or abroad.
Data two and three years after the acquisition of the qualification confirm the interest of the training carried out in the PhD for the activity within the industry and, at the same time, the suitability of the preparation achieved for academies and research bodies at an international level.
