Incoming Erasmus+ study and traineeship
What is it
The Erasmus+ programme offers foreign students the chance to study in UniGe.
Every year UniGe welcomes more than 400 Erasmus+ students coming fom over 350 partner universities.
In this page you can find the registration procedures, useful information on application, study, arrival and life in Genoa.
The period of stay varies according to the course of studies you attend at your university and to the one you choose to attend during your stay in Genoa.
The stay ranges from a minimum of 2 months to a maximum of 12 months.
If you want to study at the University of Genoa as an Erasmus student you should be nominated by your home university first.
If the number of students applying for a place exceeds the number of places available, applications will be processed and accepted in chronological order.
To be an Erasmus+ exchange student, you must meet all the following requirements. Once these steps are completed, you may proceed with the application form.
You can partecipate if there is a valid Erasmus+ Interinstitutional agreement between your home Institution and UniGe for a.y. 2019/2020.
N.B. If in the application form you do not find your study area, please contact your home University.
Recommended language skills
Your home institution, following agreement with UniGe, is responsible for providing support to its nominated candidates so that they have the recommended language skills before departing to Genova:

Your home institution and UniGe will provide assistance in obtaining insurance for incoming participants, according to the requirements of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education. UniGe will inform mobile participants of cases in which insurance cover is not automatically provided.
Information and assistance can be provided by UNIPOL-SAI, div. La Fondiaria ( Liability insurance n. 151189675, exp. 30/06/2020).
Where are you from?
Bring along the European Health Service card issued in your country of residence.
If you need to undertake medical examinations, you can address any general practitioner free of charge (a list of general practitioners is available upon request at the Settore mobilità internazionale).
The General practitioner can prescribe medicines or specific examinations.
In Genoa, specific examinations must be booked through a phone call to:

N.B. You do not need to apply to the italian National Health Service (SSN)

You must apply to the italian National Health Service.
In order to submit your application, you have to pay € 149,77 through a postal payment slip (C/C n° 606160) in the name of Amministrazione P.T. Regione Liguria indicating “Assicurazione volontaria SSN anno.....(Voluntary Health Insurance year...) in the reason for payment. For example: Assicurazione volontaria SSN anno 2020.
N.B. The payment is valid for 1 calendar year. This insurance guarantees total cover and entitles you to choose your own general practitioner.
Alternatively, you can subscribe a private health insurance policy with WAI Italy: you have to register on Welcome Association Italy and then pay € 120 for one year or € 71 for six months, through a postal payment slip.
Once you paid, you have to send copy of the postal payment slip to the following e-mail address: firstname.lastname@example.org
Later on, you can find copy of your health insurance policy on-line in your personal area on WAI Italy web site.
The abovementioned insurance policy is suitable to apply for the residence permit issue or renewal.
If an insurance policy is required in order to obtain a visa, you are obliged to subscribe it abroad.
How to apply
Applications/information must reach UniGe by:
- Autumn term* (1st semester/full year): September 30th
- Spring term* (2nd semester): November 30th
* to be adapted in case of a trimester system
You have to complete an application form for incoming Erasmus+ students in order to be accepted by UniGe and to take advantage of the welcome facilities.
Transcript of Records
We will issue a Transcript of Records no later than 5 weeks after the end of the assessment period in UniGe.
How to fill in the online application form
Please do not use smartphones or tablets to fill the Application form, since it may cause errors. If technical problems occur during the Online procedure, please mail to email@example.com.
Checklist of what to do:
- Fill in the form completely and carefully
- Indicate all your names and surnames (as they are printed in your identity documents).
When you enter names and addresses , please use the English or Italian alphabet and do not use special characters. If names or addresses contain special characters, please use the following characters in place of them:
- a instead of °á,â,ã,ä,å,ă,ą
- e instead of è,é,ê,ë,ę,ě
- i instead of ì,í,î,ï,ĩ,ī,ĭ
- o instead of ò,ó,ô,õ,ō,ŏ,ő,ǿ
- u instead of ù,ú,û,ũ,ū,ŭ,ů
- c instead of ç,ĉ,ċ,č
- n instead of ñ,ň,ń
- l instead of ł
- oe instead of ö
- ss instead of ß
- ue instead of ü
If in the list included in the Application form, you don’t find the name of your place of birth, select the option "Others, as indicated in the copy of my identity documents" and send the copy of a valid identity document (Passport or identity card), attached to the complete Application Form.
- Check the correctness of the e-mail address you indicate in your Application Form, since all official communications will be sent to you by e-mail.
At the end of data entry 2 options are available:
- Data Confirmation
if you select this option, you create the definitive version of your Application Form and your data are registered in the Erasmus + Incoming database of UniGe. No more changes can be done through the Online procedure, if changes occur, you have to contact directly the International Mobility Office
if you select this option, all data you inserted will be deleted and a new online procedure has to be started.
N.B. If you don’t confirm the application, your data won’t be registered in the UniGe Erasmus + Incoming database.
- After confirmation, 2 options are available:
- Save: if you want to save a PDF version of your application form on your computer
- Print: if you want to print the application form
- Once saved or printed, the application form has to be signed and stamped by your home University
- The signed and stamped application form has to be sent only via email to the address firstname.lastname@example.org directly by the International Office of your home University.
N.B. Email sent by unofficial email addresses or students’ addresses ( @gmail.com, @yahoo.com…) won’t be considered
- The complete Application Form sent by e-mail by your home University, has to be received by the International Mobility Office.
Your application procedure will be completed when:
- our International Mobility Office receives your Application Form duly filled in, signed and stamped
- your application form is sent to the address email@example.com
- you receive the Official confirmation message by our International Mobility Office
When you arrive
Register at the International Mobility Office
This is the first office you have to visit (don't forget to bring a valid identity document with you).
Here you will:
- be registered and enrolled
- receive a matriculation number and necessary documents
- be given the student badge that is necessary to access to the labs, to libraries and student canteens.
After you have enrolled you will be able to access all the facilities and services you are entitled to as an UniGe student.
Here you will also receive all useful information regarding the professor responsible for your Erasmus Exchange in UniGe. If needed, ask his/her consulting hours and other contacts directly to the Erasmus Office of the UniGe Department you are headed to.
Go to the Foreign students’ office (SASS)
This office can help you in:
- finding the best accommodation for your needs
- applying for the tax code number
- applying for the permit of stay (non-EU citizens only)
Contact the professor responsible for your exchange
Contact the professor responsible for your exchange, indicated in the section Erasmus+ stay data of your application form.
He/she will support you in matters concerning your study/traineeship plan (learning agreement) and the course units.
Contact the International Office of the UniGe Department you're headed to: it will provide all useful information regarding our organization, the academic calendar and the course units.
Once enrolled at UniGe by the International Mobility Office, you will be assigned a UniGePASS account to access all the online services, such as:
- wifi internet access
- student's webmail
- e-learning and aulaweb
- use of university computers
- library services
Don't forget to register for UniGeprint: with this service you will get a credit of 15€ to spend with UniGe printers.
ALISEO offers general student services such as meal services and accommodation.
Canteens are one of the main services provided for students, also Erasmus students can have access to this service, prior authorization.
The complete list of canteens available for students and the prices of meals can be consulted at the ALISEO web page.
UniGe supports International students in their accommodation research, but does not guarantee nor reserve any kind of accommodation.
Nonetheless, UniGe provides an accomodation bulletin board where you can find a flat or a room.
If you are interested in university residences, contact ALiSEO (Regional Agency for Students and Tutoring), the body in charge for this kind of accommodation.
Bed & Breakfasts, residences and religious accommodations can be alternative solutions, especially for short stays. A list of these types of accommodation is available at SASS office.
Activities for you
GEG (Gruppo Erasmus Genova) is a non-profit student organization, part of the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). Its goal is to promote student mobility in the framework of university exchange projects, according to the principle students helping students.
GEG is run by volunteers and organizes lots of activities to help foreign students to feel welcome in Genoa. GEG also organizes pick-up service upon request.
If you are interested in sports, you can contact CUS (centro universitario sportivo).
Take part in the Italian Language Course
There are many courses and subjects taught in English; if the courses and subjects in your Learning agreement are taught in Italian, you do not need to submit a language certificate but UniGe offers Italian language courses.
UniGe organizes, with the contribution of E.U., Italian language courses for foreign students, completely free of charge.
If you want to follow the course you have to fill in the appropriate section of the Application Form.
The courses are divided into levels from A1 (breakthrough) to C2 (mastery) in keeping with the criteria laid down by the Common European Framework of Reference for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe. You have to sit for an entrance test.

Extend your Erasmus+
If you want to extend the duration of your Erasmus stay, you need the authorization both of your home Institution and the professor responsible for the exchange in UniGe.
The extension request has to be received by the International Mobility Office at least 15 days before the end of the registered Erasmus period. After receiving both authorizations, the International Mobility Office will issue a confirmation of acceptance.
N.B. Remember that the Erasmus period cannot exceed 12 months and must be completed within September 30, 2020.
Learning Agreement and changes
You have to complete your learning agreement and its changes in accordance with your home institution and the professor responsible for the exchange at UniGe (following the rules of your UniGe Department).
If the document needs the approval of the Erasmus Institutional Coordinator, you have to come to the International Mobility Office after obtaining the signature of the professor responsible for the exchange.
Before you leave
Ask for the Attendance Certificate
Before leaving, you have to contact the Professor responsible for the exchange or the Erasmus office of your UniGe Department, in order to get your confirmation of attendance duly signed and stamped.
Pick up your transcript of records
At the end of your Erasmus exchange, you have to go your UniGe Students' registrar Office (segreteria) in order to get the document stating your didactic activies during the Erasmus exchange.
