Covid-19 teaching plan

General information 

This page reports some useful information on UniGe's teaching activities in the first semester of the a.y. 2020/21.

Teaching may happen in three possible ways:

  • remote
  • in-class
  • mixed - part of the teaching activities will happen in the classroom and others online; when in class, students may be distributed over several classrooms

Lectures

All the subjects of Robotics Engineering will be delivered online, with a possible addition of in-person meeting and lab activities.


What follows holds for the first semester. Information about the second semester will be given in due time.


  • Classes will be remotely taught, even for students physically located in Genoa. Robotics Engineering will use Microsoft Teams as a primary videoconferencing platform, but in specific cases other platforms may be used. Once you will be provided with a student ID, a UniGe email address and a password, you will get access to Microsoft 365. Further Instructions will follow about to get access to it. Learn more at

  • Robotics Engineering will mostly adopt a "flipped classroom" approach for teaching. According to this approach, let's say on a weekly basis, for each course: a) there will be an introduction to the main concepts that will be taught during the week, b) students will be provided with the material they must study in autonomy, and c) the professor/teacher/instructor will go through the main concepts, replies to questions and doubts, etc. Different courses will apply this approach with a different level of commitment, depending on the material to be taught.


  • Since students will be physically located in places with different time zones, we will make our best to pre-record videos, or to make video-lectures available immediately after a specific class's scheduled time, whereas during the semester we will run interactive sessions on Teams and/or Slack and/or ... depending on the subject. We will start recording videos before the start of the academic year, but the material will be disclosed week by week.


  • Periodically, we will run "big" get-in-touch events, via Teams, with the aim of getting feedback, interact, and getting acquainted with each other.

Labs and recitations

  • Depending on each course, labs may be done in different ways. However, Robotics Engineering will converge towards one preferred modality. Students physically located in Genoa will have restricted access to lab space (not the classrooms). All assignments for courses will be done in groups. The size and the composition of such groups will be decided by the teachers' board, and you'll be notified in due time which group you will belong to. Each group will be composed of a) at least one student who is physically present in Genoa, and b) many students who are not in Genoa. Each group will have to organize internally (using Teams, Slack, etc.) to conduct the work and the assignment, supervised by a professor/teacher/instructor. Assignments which will not require working with real equipment, will be done mostly remotely. Assignments which will require working with, for instance, a real robot, will be organized such that the students in the group physically located in Genoa will deploy and test all the solutions developed remotely from the group as a whole.


  • The labs will be equipped (screens, cameras, etc.) such that students from remote locations will see what happens during assignments. At the same time, we are working to provide you with all the simulation capabilities that you may need to conduct assignments.


Unknowns:


  • We don't know yet if it will be possible to conduct MSc theses in companies as part of the Erasmus traineeship, or whether it will be possible to do it outside Europe (e.g., Japan). To a large extent, it still depends on the Pandemic situation.


  • In general, we don't know what could be the restrictions in the course of operations, e.g., whether the full first semester will be done as I explained above. We will carefully monitor the situation and adapt accordingly.

Instructions for in-class lessons 

Please read all the guidelines that you must follow scrupulously to reduce the risk Covid-19 infection during their entire stay at the University.

Hygienic measures 

Always respect the hygiene measures recommended by the Ministry of Health:

  • wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based gel.
  • avoid hugs and handshakes
  • avoid close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections
  • maintain an interpersonal distance of at least three feet
  • sneeze and/or cough by covering your nose and mouth and avoiding hand contact with respiratory secretions
  • avoid the promiscuous use of bottles and glasses
  • don't touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands
  • do not take antiviral medicines or antibiotics unless prescribed by your doctor
  • clean surfaces with chlorine or alcohol-based disinfectants
  • use the mask if you suspect that you are ill or care for sick people
  • Made in China products and packages received from China are not dangerous
  • pets do not spread the new Coronavirus
  • if you have flu-like symptoms stay at home, do not go to the emergency room or doctor's office, but contact your general practitioner, pediatricians of your choice, the doctor's office, or regional numbers

N.B. Wearing the mask is mandatory.
